6:00 PM - 7:00 PMhttps://youtube.com/live/5vOhBCwKHuE?feature=shareFollowing HIAS Refugee Shabbat on February 28, please join us on March 2nd from 10:45-12 for our hands-on Sunday morning activity.
Social Action's Immigration and Refugee Support Working Group is planning an information-sharing session to highlight the different ways to support immigrants and refugees in Rochester. After brief introductory remarks, we'll have "stations" where congregants can learn more (and sign up for) different opportunities, including:
- Filling out asylum paperwork and other forms for refugees and immigrants (under the supervision of attorneys)
- Contacting local and national representatives on immigration and refugee issues
- Supporting local nonprofit organizations providing direct support to refugees and immigrants
- Collecting furniture and supplies for families arriving in Rochester
- Supporting university students in Rochester impacted by policy change
HIAS’ Seventh Annual Refugee Shabbat, which will take place on February 28 – March 1, 2025, is an invitation for congregations, organizations, and individuals to express their solidarity with the global Jewish movement for refugee protection and welcome. People seeking asylum are being turned away at borders around the world. The number of forcibly displaced people has grown to over 120 million. The growing impact of climate change exacerbates the effects of violence, conflict, and economic instability on already vulnerable populations. This is a critical moment for all of us to reaffirm and redouble our support for refugees, asylum seekers, and the forcibly displaced, and an opportunity to step back, reflect, and celebrate the work we have already done.
